A Question

Is "wingnut" a slur? I teasingly called one of my old students that last night and then wondered whether I had been out of line. The term derives, I assume, from the phrase "right-wing nut" and is used in the left blogsphere.

You are incorrect, the terms comes for "left-wing nut". That is all.

So do right-wingers use the term to describe lefties? And, either way, is it a slur?

You have a casual acquaintance with the person they should understand a friendly joke. As long as you weren’t using your status or authority abusively I see no harm in it. Worse things have happened in the history of man.

Well, it's not a compliment, usually. The term is divorced from "right" and "left" because people wanted a generic term for someone who is unhinged in a particular direction. I've seen bloggers use it to describe not right/left partisanship, but all kinds of wacky fringe positions, strongly held. Mostly it's used as a "cute" slur on the people whose views are polar to your own, though, so I'd be careful about context.
